Applaud Canada's Oilsands Leaders!
Each year, Oilsands Review honours producers and supply companies that are making significant contributions to Canada’s unconventional oil industry. Supplier of the Year is profiled in our November issue, while Producer of the Year is showchased in December. Both are celebrated at the Oilweek Annual Report Awards luncheon each November.
The process
In late summer, we begin soliciting nominations from our readers. After nominations close, an internal editorial committee featuring staff from Oilsands Review, Oilweek, Oil and Gas Inquirer, New Technology Magazine and the Daily Oil Bulletin determines the finalists. The finalists are voted on by our readers, and the winners become Producer and Supplier of the Year.
What do we look for?
The winners of Producer and Supplier of the Year exhibit strategy, performance, efficiency, innovation, and leadership environmentally, socially, and economically.
Nominees must have Canadian offices, and in the case of Producer of the Year, must produce oil.
Our 2011 winners:
Supplier of the Year: Canadian Dewatering
Founded in Fort McMurray in the early days of oilsands mining, Canadian Dewatering has long provided the industry with fluid management services including the day-to-day maintenance of tailings ponds and site-wide dewatering services to maintain operations.
A major feather in the company’s cap was its recent selection as the main contractor for Suncor Energy in the deployment of its TRO tailings management system, which can dry tailings to a solid surface in a matter of weeks rather than decades. Canadian Dewatering is an example of the kind of commitment and innovation that is necessary to tackle the weighty challenges facing the oilsands sector, and the associated business benefits.
Producer of the Year: ConocoPhilips Canada
ConocoPhilips Canada, the Canadian arm of one of the largest energy companies in the world, exited 2010 with in situ oilsands reserves of approximately 1.3 billion barrels, putting it in the enviable position of number two in the in situ producer group. Through its operated and non-operated steam assisted gravity drainage projects, the company is currently producing about 72,000 barrels per day with designs to grow that to 250,000 barrels per day by 2020.
But the company’s oilsands partnerships are not just about increasing production volumes—they are also about driving the environmental and social sustainability of bitumen development. As a founding member of the Oil Sands Leadership Initiative, the company is working hard to improve the sector’s performance and communication of its achievements.
